TOP DEFINITION

flying monkey

In popular psychology, a flying monkey is someone who does the narcissist’s bidding to inflict additional torment to the narcissist’s victim.

It might consist of spying on the victim, spreading gossip, threatening, painting the narcissist as the victim and the target as the perpetrator.

Despite this, the narcissist does not hesitate to make flying monkeys their scapegoats when and if needed.

Narcissists Cannot Tolerate Criticism

A narcissist’s ego is hyper-sensitive. Criticism causes ‘narcissistic injury,’ which can trigger an outburst of ‘narcissistic rage.’ The affected will blow a perceived slight out of proportion and lash out at its source with accusations and blame—never admitting any responsibility. The narcissist plays the innocent victim act, engages allies, and can go to great lengths to exact revenge on someone they feel offended by.

When deprived of narcissistic supply, narcissists experience symptoms similar to the withdrawal symptoms of a drug addict; becoming delusional, agitated, helpless, and emotionally unhinged. They disintegrate and crumble, and may even experience a psychotic episode. They engage in “magical thinking;” believing that they are omniscient, omnipotent, and that they cannot fail. This makes them fearless and relentless in their pursuit of revenge.
